It is quite possible that instead of using the name Gear S4, Samsung’s next generation smartwatch, which follows the Gear S3 (which made its debut back in August of 2016), will be called the Galaxy Watch. According to a report recently published by GalaxyClub, the world’s biggest seller of smartphone devices has apparently registered a new logo (see it here) with the Korean Intellectual Property Organization, and this logo clearly indicates the full Samsung Galaxy Watch brand name.
So what do we know (or think we know) about the South Korean tech giant’s soon to be unveiled new smartwatch offering? As reported by TechRadar, Samsung is said to be looking to make the Galaxy Watch available in color options of black, gold, and silver. As far as basic design goes, some speculation suggests that the smartwatch will go with a circular face design, which should keep consistent with past Gear S models. Also, rumor has it that the newest Galaxy branded wearable device will be sold in a couple of editions -- one for fashion conscious consumers, and another for active or sports minded folks. This should not be much of a surprise -- after all, Samsung had previously launched different variants of the Gear S3. A report by Patently Mobile even states that the latest model’s screen might be fused into the bezel.
Do options regarding size matter? Samsung seems to believe so, at least according to a recent SamMobile report, which indicates that the mobile manufacturer is looking forward to launching two different sizes for the Galaxy Watch -- a 38 millimeter variant and a 42 millimeter version. But considering that the Apple Watch is also offered in exactly those two sizes, this is kind of expected.
An argument can be made that bigger or more powerful batteries on smartwatch devices could not hurt. Per XDA Developers, Samsung might be upgrading the battery size for the Galaxy Watch, from 380 mAh (as seen on the Gear S3) to 470 mAh. For consumers, that should equate to several days of use from just a single charging session.
What about operating system? Things are far from simple, mainly because Samsung happens to have its own smartwatch OS with Tizen, which means that it is quite possible that the tech giant would forego using Google’s Wear OS (formerly Android Wear) in favor of its own platform. This is close to a coin toss at this point, but if one has to bet, Tizen should be the likely choice.
