Just this week, Magic Leap took the opportunity to announce that the Magic Leap One Creator Edition, its first mixed reality headset, will be hitting store shelves in America before the end of the summer season. The company also revealed that major US mobile service provider AT&T will be the exclusive wireless distributor of the headset, as well as other future Magic Leap consumer products.
The Magic Leap One Creator Edition headset is being positioned as a wearable computer that will boost a user’s real world experience with immersive digital content powered by augmented reality. According to Magic Leap, the headset is expected to start shipping later this year to qualified designers and developers.
It is interesting to note that AT&T has also taken the opportunity to talk about how its countrywide network will be in a good position to provide full support for the Magic Leap One Creator Edition headset, and other future products. This could be taken as a hint that the number two biggest carrier in the United States is looking to fully leverage its 5G network technology in supporting a new generation of 5G driven or Internet of Things (IoT) devices and gadgets. Remember that back in January early this year, AT&T had already promised to debut its mobile 5G offering in no less than a dozen markets in America in 2018.
For those not familiar with Magic Leap, it is a startup company that for years has been developing (rather secretly, we might add) an augmented reality platform, and of course, products that will take full advantage of that technology. Apart from its Magic Leap One Creator Edition headset, the firm is said to be working on a pair of lightweight AR glasses, as well as a wireless “Totem” controller. Although secretive by nature, Magic Leap has posted a series of demo videos on the Internet, fueling additional excitement for their upcoming offerings.
Needless to say, Magic Leap’s deal with AT&T could significantly benefit both parties. For AT&T, the mobile operator is no stranger to exclusive deals with tech companies. Some may remember that for several years, the carrier was the exclusive seller of Apple’s iPhones. Of course, not all of its exclusive distribution deals went on to be successful -- its partnership with Amazon’s Fire phone notably never took off with the masses. Still, logic dictates AT&T might be growing extra careful now, and its deal with Magic Leap seems like a good one.
