Back in March, it was reported that the account information of AT&T customers from 2021 were leaked and offered for $1 million. The leak re-emerged on a data theft forum site last month where it was offered for free.
During the time of the report, AT&T denied the existence of the leak by saying:
“Based on our investigation today, the information that appeared in an internet chat room does not appear to have come from our systems."
Today, however, the wireless carrier has finally acknowledged that the leak includes over 7.6 million current customers and 65 million previous customers.
After this discovery, the wireless carrier has reset the security passcodes of the affected customers. They have also alerted these customers and informed them that the leak may include their “full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and passcode.”
AT&T further says that the leaked information does not include personal financial information or call history. The leaked data also appears to be from 2019 and earlier.
They also promised that they are working with “external cybersecurity experts to analyze the situation.” But so far, they have found “no evidence of authorized access” to its systems.
