With the rampant scams happening via text, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. So whenever you receive a dubious text, you need to verify its authenticity before you click on any of the links. Yes, even if it’s from your wireless provider.
AT&T customers on Android devices received a mysterious text message last week that appeared to be a scam or spam message. Users even received a warning from Google that the message looked like spam.
But as it turned out, the message was real. AT&T sent out a text message reminding users of a free replacement device. The message included a link where users can fill up their phone number and ZIP code.
It turns out that AT&T was giving select customers a free phone because some Android devices were being prevented from receiving software and security updates. Because of this, AT&T is sending out a replacement device of the same make and model that the customers are currently using. They can also get one of equal or greater value.
AT&T says:
"Your affected device should continue to work normally for calls and texts. But you won’t be able to get updates for software and apps or security patches that affect the device’s operating system. This can cause performance and security issues over time."
You have until June 26 to claim your free replacement device.
