Earlier today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) started its Auction 110. This is the third auction in its series of selling licenses for valuable C-band (mid-band) radio frequencies.
The three major US wireless carriers have all registered and qualified to place a bid in the auction. The main reason why this frequency is in demand is because it provides a fine mix between coverage and speed when deployed for 5G networks.
Prior to Auction 110, the FCC held Auction 107, which was noted for offering the highest and widest frequency range in the band. During this auction, the three major carriers spent billions. Verizon was the one who ended up spending the most. Before Auction 107, the FCC also held Auction 105 for the middle range of frequencies. Both Verizon and Dish Network topped the auction list.
Auction 110 is for the lowest range of frequencies: 3,450-3,550 MHz. This radio spectrum is currently being used by the Department of Defense for radar operations. It supports missile defense, weapons control, air defense, electronic warfare, air traffic control, and counter-mortar capabilities.
