Today’s hottest news comes as a total surprise, especially for those in the smartphone market. Dish Network has just signed a new agreement with AT&T.
The two parties signed a network services agreement (NSA) for Dish to use AT&T as its MVNO partner. The agreement includes a $5 billion bill that Dish will pay over the next 10 years in order to use AT&T’s 4G and 5G networks. The agreement is in place while Dish builds its own 5G network.
Since this is a non-exclusive agreement, Dish says that its customers can continue to use the networks of T-Mobile/Sprint. But it will give its Boost Mobile, Ting, and Republic Wireless customers an option to use the networks of AT&T for voice, data, and messaging services.
In return, AT&T has the right to request access to use some of Dish Network’s wireless spectrum.
Although the agreement has been made, there are some who speculate this could get mixed reactions from regulators. After all, they allowed Dish to purchase Sprint’s prepaid businesses as a way of approving the merger between T-Mobile and Sprint. Not to mention, the original plan was to have Dish rent services from T-Mobile for 7 years while it builds its own mobile network.
We’ll have to see their reaction to today’s news.
