Months ago, state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the merger between T-Mobile and Sprint. The trial is already set to take place in two weeks, but two states recently announced that they will be withdrawing their support for the lawsuit.
Early this week, Texas and Nevada announced that they have already reached a settlement with T-Mobile. In line with the settlement, they will no longer be joining the lawsuit to block the merger. The lawsuit was created to block the proposed merger, since the state attorneys general believed that it would affect jobs, 5G network, and that the reduced competition would lead to higher prices. T-Mobile addressed such issues and promised that they will cover at least 64 percent of Nevada’s residents with 100Mbps or faster 5G. The promise also mentioned offering 5G connection to “areas where most Texans live” in the next three years after the merger is closed.
In addition to this, T-Mobile has promised that its customers from Texas will have continue to have access to the unlimited plans that they are currently offering for the next five years. As for the problem with employment, T-Mobile promises that all of the retail employees of T-Mobile and Sprint will be offered new jobs with competitive wages and job roles. They also intend to continue the Sprint call center based in Las Vegas by turning this into a New T-Mobile Customer Center.
T-Mobile has also promised Nevada that it will be providing the state full benefit of its project to provide free 100Mbps home internet to 10 million households as a way of helping children be able to do their homework. The Un-carrier will be contributing $30 million to women, small businesses, minorities, as well as the Native American Tribes in the state.
With Nevada and Texas out of the lawsuit, there are still 14 state attorneys general who oppose the merger. And as the date of the trial comes closer, T-Mobile could be upping its efforts in winning over those states to improve their chances.
