If you’re an iPhone user who recently encountered trouble sending a text message to an Android user, you’re not alone. It turns out this has been an ongoing issue between the two software platforms.
9to5Mac recently reported on the issue that users posted on Reddit. According to affected users, they have trouble sending a text to an Android device since an extra digit was being added to their recipient’s phone number. As a result, the message could not be sent since the number is incorrect. The report also shared that the issue seems to be prevalent among Android users with an AT&T device.
Users revealed that the bug is turning phone numbers into an international number by adding a + sign at the start of the number. The iPhone device thinks the recipient’s number is invalid and rejects it or starts a new thread with the extra + sign at the start of the Android user’s number. The iPhone user is unable to respond to the message in the new thread. Oddly enough though, the other party is able to receive the message.
To keep sending a message to the iPhone user, the Android user has to use the new thread. Meanwhile, the iPhone user has to use the previous thread he used to send a message. Simply put, there will be two threads for the two to continue communicating with each other.
At this point, it’s still unclear if this unnecessary step is being done by the carrier or the device. But since Verizon and T-Mobile customers do not seem to be affected by this bug, it’s possible that it is a carrier problem. Hopefully, a fix gets released soon.
