Believe it or not, there are still a number of pranksters who make emergency calls to 911. And although the rules and penalties against this vary per state, you can still get in trouble for making such calls.
This is why there are some people who are cautious about calling 911. And some actually panic when they accidentally make an emergency call on their phones.
But as Apple revealed, this isn’t the best way to deal with a 911 call made by accident. Thanks to MacRumors, an update to Apple’s support documentation for Crash Detection feature was spotted. Apple suggests that “if the call has been made but you don’t need emergency services, don’t hang up. Wait until a responder answers, then explain that you don’t need help.”
This notice is for device users who notice that their iPhone or cellular-enabled Apple Watch devices make an emergency call. And it actually makes a lot of sense. If you immediately hang up without explaining anything to emergency responders, it could prompt them to follow up with an “investigation” to make sure that you are 100% safe.
You won’t be held liable for accidentally calling 911, especially if you properly explain your digital blunder to the authorities. But you could be held liable if emergency services arrive at your door after an emergency call and there’s no real emergency.
