Nokia and Samsung have renewed their agreement on 5G patent technology. A similar deal was previously agreed upon by the two companies but this expired last December 31, 2022. And now, the agreement allows Samsung to use the “fundamental inventions in 5G and other technologies” developed by Nokia.
According to Nokia Technologies’ President, Jenni Lukander:
"Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry, and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies."
Under the new agreement, Samsung will be making royalty payments to Nokia for a multi-year period starting January 1, 2023. Other than this information, the agreement terms are kept confidential.
Nokia continues to have more than 20,000 patent families. Out of that number, 4,500 are said to be required for 5G technology.
