The Blackberry Z10 (BB10) is one the latest smartphones released by BlackBerry. The release of this phone as well as the release of the Blackberry 10 OS are very essential releases to the fate of the company. If the company's current consumers are not fans of the new mobile devices, this could prove to be critical to the future and survival of the company itself.
The Blackberry Z10 was first released on January 31st of the year 2013 in the United Kingdom. It was then released in Canada, the UAE and India in February. It was released in the United States on March 22, 2013.
There are three overall pros associated with the Blackberry Z10. The first is that the smartphone has a nice display. The second pro is the solid build of the phone. The third is the fact that the battery is removable. A lot of smartphones out now do not have removable batteries nor do the back's of the phones come off of the device.
There are three main cons associated with the Z10. The first con is that the phone has a quite limited app selection. The second con is the slow shutdown and booting of the device. The device can take up to 30 seconds to shutdown. It may also take up to an entire minute to boot after the battery has been removed. The final con is the speakers are considered underpowered.
The BlackBerry Z10 is said to be quite gesture based. When the screen is swipped up from the bottom, one is brought to the main interface. In this interface you can select from up to eight of the apps that are currently running. If the screen is swiped up and to the right, the Blackberry Hub is brought up. The Blackberry Hub is the place to view all the connectivity updates in one place. Text messages, social network site notifications, and emails can all be viewed in this one place.
To download apps on the Blackberry Z10 one must visit BlackBerry World. Apps that are already installed included a browser, BlackBerry Messenger, the funky calculator, maps and also a compass. It is stated that Blackberry World has a lot of junk apps that are too expensive.
The web performance on the mobile device responds considerably quick. Like most of the apps on the device, the web launches promptly. It maneuvers through pages smoothly and in no time. Still when tested against other devices, the BB10 takes twice as long to perform some taks as the iPhone 5 and the Samsung ATIV S.
The 1,800mAh battery is considered to perform on an average level. The battery is small and compact. When tested by having constant activity until it died, it lasted for eight hours and eleven minutes long.
Completely touchscreen, the Blackberry Z10 is without the physcial keyboard the company has become known for. It has multi-touch interface that include gestures such as tap, swipe, pinch and aslo reverse pinch. The operating system of the phone is the new Blackberry 10 mobile operating system. The system is based on the real-time operating system known as QNX.
The appearance of the Z10 is very sleek and professional. The monochrome exterior is dark in color minus the mirror effect logo found on the center of the back of the device. The front of the mobile phone features a 4.2 inch touchscreen and the Blackberry name displayed just beneath the screen. The camera and its flash is located in the top left corner of the back of the phone. The Blackberry Z10 has been said to have a very strong resemblance to the Apple iPhone 5.
Though surely the Blackberry Z10 was in the mnaking a while before the release of the Apple iPhone, the similarities found bewtween the two cannot be ignored. A major difference found between the twop is the Z10 has horizontal bands that ran across both the top and the bottom of the device. The iPhone 5 has a very smooth, clean, all-glass front appearence.
The phone has a make up very much like the Playbook that was released before it. The outside case has a rigidity feel to it. The mobile device has a backplate that is removable. The back plate is made completely of plastic that has been dipped in a thick rubber coating. The coating assist in making the device easier to hold with one hand securely. It lessens the worry of the phone mistakenly falling or slippling out of one's hand. Strategically built directly into the backplate is a NFC antenna. The backplate is also able to flex and bend much like the latest smartphones from Samsung.
The overall size of the Blackberry Z10 is considered not to small and not too large. It is measured at 2.6 inches wide and 5.13 inches tall. It has a thickness of approximately 0.37 inches.
The inside of the device consist of several different gadgets to make it work. There is a speaker grill that is made of gunmetal. It is located inside the phone just above the glass pane. Found just beneath that same glass pane is the 2-megapixel camera. This camera records videos at a quality of 720p. The rear camera significantly record at a better quality of 1080p. The rear quality is 8-megapixel camera assisted with a LED flash.
There are not many buttons found on the BB10. The wake and sleep button is the most important button found on the device. This button is located in its traditional position like all Blackberry devices which is at the top in the center. The traditional button positioning continues with a three-way rocker button found on the right side of the phone. This discreet button essentially controls the phone's volume. One section of the three-way button raises the volume, another lowers the volume. In the middle of those is a section that plays and pauses music as well as toggles Siri-like Voice Control. The device has no menu button or camera button physically found on its design.
On the left side of the Blackberry Z10 there are two ports. These ports are the micro-HDMI port and the micro-USB port. On the top of the device is a 3.5mm headphone jack. The slot for a microSD card is found under the backplate. The largest memory the phone is allowed is 32 GB. The phone also has a micro-SIM card located behind the backplate as well.
In conclusion, the device is pretty good and quite modern. It has a lot of charm though there is not anything that makes it necessarily stand out against its competition. Loyal Blackberry fans should be satisfied with the smart phone as it does offer an upgrade to the technoloogy they have grown to love and appreciate.
